Who is Digit?
Bridgett is a high school girl who lives in Chicago with her father, an ex-cop, private investigator, who
specializes in insurance fraud cases. She is a self-proclaimed geek, who happens to be very good at mathematics
and quick to acquire new computer skills. Her Math teacher, Mr. Paulson, called her Digit one day in class, and
the nickname stuck. She helps her dad solve some of his cases by employing mathematical and computing skills that
she learned in school.
This web site presents the math and computer skills that she uses in these stories in more detail. If you have any
questions, please be sure to send her an email through the link below!
Series Descriptions:
1. Digit Loses a Friend:
When her best friend and classmate is killed in a freak car accident, Digit uses
data mining techniques to find a link between
this so called accident and an insurance fraud ring that her dad is investigating.
2. Digit Finds a Gun:
A prize winning cow is killed by a chunk of metal that comes through the roof of a barn and
everyone assumes that it fell from an airplane. When a car and a stereo system are destroyed in
a similar manner, all three locations being within a 25 mile area, they suspect that the source
may be on the ground. Digit suggests a way to fit parabolas
to crime scene data and calculate a point of origin.
3. Digit and the Moon Shadow:
The Gemini Bank’s mascot, an 18 karat gold statue of a two-headed dragon, is stolen from the lobby
of their headquarters. The twin tower building was under constant video surveillance that night, under
a full moon, in a cloudless sky. Digit is taking a trigonometry class this semester and learning about
measuring distances from parallax. While touring the Chicago Police
Department’s new Audio-Video Lab, she notices something unusual while the technician is viewing a pair
of surveillance tapes in time-synchronized mode. At home she uses ray
tracing software to figure out how the thieves got away with it.
4. Digit Treats a Deadly Virus:
Nick Malone, a notorious crime boss, is facing three counts of murder for the execution-style killings of
high ranking members of a rival gang. Fearing he'll get yet another continuance for medical reasons, federal
prosecutors start looking for alternatives, in case their eye-witness becomes unwilling or unable to testify.
Digit's father is enlisted to investigate Malone’s medical claims in an attempt to add charges of insurance
fraud. When the mob finds out about this new ploy, however, they respond in a manner that one might expect.
Digit employs data recovery and email tracking
techniques to defuse the threat and find out who is behind it.
A Word from the Author:
I am deeply concerned about the declining number of high school and college students interested in Math and
Science. There may come a time, perhaps sooner than later, when the technology we are building today will be
in need of considerable technical support, but not enough people will have the skills necessary to keep it
working. I hope this series of short stories about Digit will convince today's young adults that these kinds
of skills are cool and valuable, and that they can master them, too, if they just take the initiative to get
started in a related program at school.
