Three Mirrors on a Frame

They Did it with Mirrors!

Digit used her computer to design a framework that held three mirrors to show how the thieves might have fooled the video camera while they broke into the lobby of the north tower and stole the golden dragon. The video camera was mounted on the balcony of the bank president's apartment across the street from the bank. The framework was assembled and hoisted into position from the apartment below his.

The bank's twin towers are colored blue and red, to distinguish north from south. The red line shows the orientation of the south tower's image in each mirror. The video camera sees two towers, but the north tower is really a flipped image of the south tower! The thieves could break through the window and steal the golden dragon from the lobby of the north tower without being seen by the video camera.
